Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA)
REMEMBER
AHERA compliance requires that you
keep your management plan up-to-date.
IS YOUR PLAN CURRENT?
  1. Appoint the “designated person” for AHERA. Keep up to date.
  2. Require a 2-hour awareness training for your custodial and maintenance staff.  Have them sign in and put the register in your management plan.
  3. Annually notify your staff, students, patrons and any workers who may come into your facilities of your AHERA survey, its results, the location of your management plan, etc. Put the notice in your plan.
  4. Semi-annually survey your ACM and record the results in your management plan.
  5. Keep a copy of the 3-year AHERA inspection in your plan.
  6. Keep a copy of licenses, training, physicals, etc. of school personnel qualified in asbestos related services (if any).
  7. Keep a copy of the company’s license that does your operations and maintenance (O & M) program.
  8. For new construction, get a contractor’s statement saying “asbestos free” building materials were used. Any added facility, if not asbestos free, must be surveyed and added to your management plan.
  9. Keep copies of reports on any ACM glove bag, encapsulation, clean up, repair, abatement, demolition, air monitoring, disposal documents, etc. in your plan.
  10. Keep the records of any response action taken since the original management plan was approved.
